Gallery Description Project

Sat Apr 7, 2012, 9:22 AM
Most of you probably are aware that deviantART has a lot of categories. As you've seen over the past few months, we volunteers, in coordination with Moonbeam13, often help to orchestrate various changes in category structure in order to make the submission and browsing experiences simpler and more advantageous for the community.

That said, there's another aspect of categories which, sadly, often have been overlooked. I'm referring to the Gallery Descriptions. Over time, gallery descriptions have fallen into disarray, leaving many categories with old and outdated descriptions, others with incorrect descriptions, and yet others without a description at all.

At the moment, gallery descriptions are most prominent when submitting new deviations. However, as part of this project, we hope that they will become more evident as you browse the site. One of our goals is to make a simple, navigable category structure focusing on descriptions that are clear, concise, and consistent.

Gallery Description Project

The Gallery Description Project will be directed by haldron and BeccaJS, working with Moonbeam13

We will be working with individual volunteers to make changes to their categories, working one top-level category (i.e Digital Art, Fan Art, Anthro) at a time. All of the changes will take place behind the scenes, and won't be immediately evident to the community at large. But you will begin to notice new, updated descriptions popping up in various categories in the next few weeks.

We're not going to lie, this isn't a small project. It's likely going to take us several months from start to finish, at which point we'll naturally post another celebratory journal announcing the completion of the changes.

What Will the New Descriptions Be Like?

Our goal with the new descriptions is simple. We are working to ensure that the descriptions are as clear to the community as possible. To further this goal, we've come up with the Three Cs. Clarity, Conciseness, and Consistency.

Clarity refers to our goal of simple, easy to understand descriptions. We understand that English is not the first language of many deviants, and to ensure accessibility to our community we want to ensure that the descriptions are easy to read and intuitive.

Conciseness refers to our goal of short descriptions. We want to avoid descriptions that exceed 2 or 3 sentences. That way you're not overwhelmed with information and can quickly sort through the categories to find what's best for your deviation, or what you're looking to browse.

Consistency refers to our goal of a uniform look and feel to the gallery descriptions. While there will be slight variation between the galleries, overall the descriptions should be formatted and read similarly.

A Better Browsing and Submitting Experience

Our overall goal with this project is to improve the overall experience when browsing and submitting, making it easier for everyone, whether they've just found the site, or they've been here for 12 years, to utilize the categories to find and share the best work possible. We welcome feedback on these plans and the changes as we progress, just leave them on this article!

Don't forget to make the descriptions more visible, not hidden under a small "gallery info" button, otherwise I guess a lot of people will still ignore them.
Maybe a few example images for each category would help... although I'm afraid they may also confuse some.

Anyway, deviantArt is a category nightmare =p Is there an easy way to know many of them are they? (I tried to count... and well, I didn't go past the "3D Art" category which already has 32 end-categories, it seems.)

Our hope is that the descriptions will become more visible once this project is completed. The problem is that right now so many of the descriptions are outdated or empty that it wouldn't make sense for us to make them more visible.

And maybe when we'll done we'll post how many categories we had to change, that might be fun.

Ahah, yes, you should really post the numbers of categories you updated. Though, I'm not sure if it'll be funny or scary

Anyway, I wish you a lot of patience for the description changes. My English is not fluent enough to help there I think.

It's a nice idea =)
I think it would be nice to have also with the short and clear description a link to an article giving more background information : technics, famous artists, history... This could be a nice way to use some great projects about art history and education in place on DA =)

Thanks for the comment! :D

I'll look into whether or not it would be possible for us to include some sort of "More information" link in the descriptions. I can't make any guarantees, but it's worth looking into!

No problem =) I'm not waiting for any guarantees, the simple fact that my suggestion has been taken in account is enough =)

Sounds good

For descriptions on the gallery picking modal, I would suggest something like this [link] People are too fucking lazy/stupid to know to click that button to get a description, and I think that often leads to miscats.

Will a (?) button be added to galleries while browsing to get a description of that gallery? It used to be like that, and I think that was also helpful to people, just so they got a description of what they thought that gallery should be.

I might even suggest that you pick an example deviation thumb for each gallery, in case a 3 line description isn't enough. Although I'm mixed on whether to link to the actual deviation, since that would add some unfair exposure to that person. And some things, like scripts/downloadable deviations might not work so well in a 120px thumb.

At this point the primary goal is to get the descriptions updated before any technical changes take place. That would also be more $Moonbeam13's territory, but hopefully there will be some more exposure to the descriptions once they're brought back to a useful state.

yea !! love it...........I'm a photographer..and when submitting to
flowers ...........I could never understand why animals are attached to it
flowers should be flower
Animals ....should be animals
if this could be looked at and sorted that would be great

The structure probably won't change, it's just the descriptions. Also, animals and flowers both are nature, so I don't think it's that weird :B

I like the idea, but I hope the consistency and conciseness will not make the descriptions sound too robotic. Like the descriptions when submitting. Their concise but difficult to utilise due to their frankness and lack of detail.
Include example too. Or list of likely submissions...

Each gallery should still have a bit of it's own flare, but unfortunately sometimes it's best to be a little robotic to make sure that the descriptions are as clear as possible and to try and make sure the descriptions will be valid for years to come. :)
