More Like This - Beta

Thu Aug 30, 2012, 11:41 AM
DeviantART is proud to announce two major improvements to the way you browse and discover artwork on the site.  And as Beta Testers, we’d like you to be the first to give these new enhancements a test drive!

Update: Based on user feedback, we've made various changes to More Like This, which you can check out here!

More Like This Beta

Search deviantART using Art

More Like This is deviantART’s newest content discovery tool – enabling you to find similar, relevant deviations, artists, and collections to a chosen deviation.

With More Like This, you can:

Discover Related Art:
More Like This is not image recognition software.  Instead, it looks at where an image exists on the deviantART social graph and finds deviations that are nearby.  This means that members of the deviantART community help define the More Like This results.  Explore the connections and insights of the deviantART community with every click.

Discover Related Artists:
More Like This helps to surface artists that create artwork similar to what you’ve selected, allowing you to find and explore new talent!

Discover Related Collections:
With millions of Collections of artwork curated by the deviantART community, More Like This lets you find collections of favourites from the community that are relevant to the artwork you select.

Using More Like This

When using Browse or Search, hover over a deviation and select “More Like This” to find more content similar to that deviation.

Browse Improvements

Updated Navigation
In order to provide a more uniform approach to navigation, we’ve made some changes to the way you navigate through some types of content on the Browse and Search page. We’ve improved the left-hand navigation bar to include both a primary navigation while on deviantART, the Popular/Newest options, and the category picker you know and love. Additionally, we’ve improved the overall design of the sidebar, providing it with a cleaner look.

Full View Mode
In addition to the thumb wall and thumb grid views we introduced, we have now introduced full view mode, allowing you to browse through deviations at a larger size. This option also gives you the ability to favourite, collect, view comments, and participate in the discussion right from the browse page!

Endless Scrolling
We’ve replaced our outdated page system on our main discovery pages (browse, search, and More Like This) with endless scrolling, allowing you to dynamically load more deviations as you scroll, without the need to go jumping back and forth between pages.

Try It Out

We’d like to invite all of our Beta Testers to give More Like This and the new Browse interface a try!

This is a big change to how browse and search works on deviantART, so please let us know if you find any bugs or issues. If you come across any problems while browsing, searching, or using More Like This, let us know by filing a ticket in our Issue Tracker.

In addition, we’re interested in hearing your feedback!

  • What do you think of More Like This? What kind of deviations did you find? What did you think of the process?
  • How is your experience browsing through artwork using the new full-view browse mode?
  • What do you think of the new navigation sidebar? Does it better enable you to specify your browse settings?

DeviantART is proud to announce two major improvements to the way you browse and discover artwork on the site. And as Beta Testers, we’d like you to be the first to give these new enhancements a test drive!

It's fine if there is a clickable link to images that are "More Like This" but the box of deviations that automatically displays? That is ridiculous. Who wants their work to have to compete for their followers attention like that? Not to mention, some of the pieces that appear have nothing to do with the original work shown. A disable capability needs to be allowed. Trust me, I get needing exposure, but no artist should have to share their exposure against their will (especially, when we have no idea if the artist we're sharing that exposure with are just as serious about their work as we are about ours).

I do not like the 6 pack thumbnails that is now displayed automatically next to deviations. These are often old pictures of mine (or of other people!) and I personally do not want my old work to be disposed besides each new deviation. Moreover it's distracting. It would be interesting as long as I can choose which images to show off! And on which criteria do you choose the "more like this" thumbnails? They are not "LIKE THIS".
The "More like this button" is ok when people choose to see more like this. But not AUTOMATICALLY displayed beside deviations.

I like this option! It allows for more under-appreciated artwork to have a chance to be seen. I kind of got a lot of artwork I've already seen in the list (as well as my friends' artwork), but I did see some new pictures that caught my eye. Great feature!

When I do it for something I uploaded, it's only showing me things from my gallery, regardless of how dissimilar it is. It's seemingly putting the more popular things first.

No dice. I understand why this feature works for popular artists, it just proves to me that I'm not one of them yet.

More Like This
I have mixed feelings about this. I love the concept but the execution throws it off a bit for me. I would prefer the button to be farther down on the deviation page, just because it makes more sense to me if all of the buttons related to the deviation first before you start trying to lead someone else away from the deviation. Put that's more a personal preference than anything else.

I do wonder about the criteria chosen behind the piece. Several times when I used the button it just produced whatever was in the deviants gallery... that seems a bit redundant to me. If I like something, the first thing I do is see if I like more from that deviant's gallery. And with the "More from" option in combination with "More like this", the new addition seems entirely pointless.

Updated Navigation

I'm not a fan of the updated navigation As someone who used the drop-down navigation regularly (multiple times a day) I find it more inconvenient that only a few of the options show up a time and that we have to go in a click for more options (I use all of the different options fairly regularly depending on whether I'm just browsing or searching for something in particular).

For me at least, it seems to be a bit more awkward switching from popular all time to newest to narrowing it down popular 3 days etc. I do like how it looks (having them all flush on the left) but in the process of using it, it seems like it's a little more burdensome.

Fullview

I love this, except for the fact that it doesn't give any hint of the Artist's Comments. I always afraid to comment on something without reading the Artist's Comments first since they tend to be there for a reason :)

Endless Scrolling

I would prefer this to be an option but not the default. Sometimes I use pages as a marker of where I am in my search, but you can't do this with endless scrolling, you always have to start over.

But when I don't have a goal in mind, endless scrolling is certainly useful :)

Hey! I have a suggestion.
More Like This displays some art I already have in my favourites, which isn't really necessary. So I propose that in some kind of way (because I don't know how these things work, but you guys are bond to figure it out!) More Like This wouldn't show works already in our favourites... ^^ I don't like scrolling and scrolling, only to find the things I've already found (and favourited)~!

I've tried the "More Like This" thing on one of my pics, and all that seems to pop up are pics from my gallery and pics related to stuff I haven't addressed in years (Twilight for example) that has recieved the most faves.

And why on Earth does My Little Pony show up? Aside from my one Journal entry, I haven't even touched the series.

on which data is more like this actually based?
it could be a really cool and useful feature but it seems like it doens't really work...
when I try it on one of my pics almost every pic it shows is from my gallery, even if it is in completely different category. when I click on one of my drawings I wanna see similar ones from other artist but not my own photos ._.

I think more like this should be based on the catergory, the tags, and simply the look of the picture (like when you use the google images search where you can find similar pictures)

It doesn't really do much for me, honestly... All it does is bring up things in the person's gallery, as well as those of their friends and in their favorites. It's not really related works.

I second =danyelasr's comment.

More Like This could be a really really awesome feature - but not yet. Tried it for browsing some tattoo designs and some really strange fan art of Naruto (?) showed up. When clicking the button on one of my own fractal deviations mostly my own gallery items show up - including my emotes :O

Love the Show More option

It's an excellent feature. Often I've come across a beautiful image and wanted to see more like it but have no idea what to search to find more pieces of art like it! More Like This is perfect for this. It really helps out.

So far I've encountered no errors so it's all working well, for now.
